Assata Shakur: “I’m Up”
Assata Shakur was a revolutionary Black activist, author, and powerful voice in the struggle for Black liberation. Born JoAnne Deborah Byron on July 16, 1947, she became active in the Black Panther Party and later the Black Liberation Army, advocating for racial justice, self-determination, and freedom for oppressed people.
In 1977, Assata was convicted in connection with a 1973 New Jersey Turnpike shooting—charges she consistently denied. In 1979, members of the Black Liberation Army carried out a daring operation that freed her from prison. She later reached Cuba, where she received political asylum and lived in exile for more than four decades.
Her celebrated memoir, Assata: An Autobiography, recounts her childhood, political awakening, imprisonment, resistance, and unwavering commitment to liberation. The book has become an essential work of Black revolutionary literature, inspiring generations of activists, artists, and freedom seekers.
Assata Shakur died in Havana, Cuba, on September 25, 2025, at the age of 78. Her words, courage, and revolutionary spirit continue to influence movements for justice and liberation around the world.
Wyence’s “I’m Up” apparel honors Assata Shakur’s resilience and refusal to be silenced. Her life reminds us to remain conscious, courageous, and committed to the continuing struggle for freedom.
